Overview

IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) coordinates standards through their Standards Technical Committee.

Mission Statement and Charter

  1. Recommend Standards of Engineering Practices to be followed in Fields of Interest of the IES (IES Bylaw 9.4.1)
  2. Coordinate and facilitate standards across the technical activities of IES
  3. Assist the IES Technical Committees that generate and develop appropriate standards in its field of interest, for processing by the IEEE Standards Committee, and ensure it is in accordance to IEEE policies (IES Bylaw 9.2.3)
  4. Monitor and report to the AdCom on Standards in the Fields of Interest of the IES that are proposed or established by other organizations (IES Bylaw 9.4.1)

These technical fields of interest covered by the IES Technical Committees ( http://www.ieee-ies.org/members/technical-committees ) address the latest developments in intelligent and computer control systems, robotics, factory communications and automation, flexible manufacturing, data acquisition and signal processing, vision systems, smart grids, and power electronics. The Society continually updates its program of technical activities to meet the needs of modern industry.

Operations:

The Standards Committee is the standards sponsor for standards proposed and developed by IES.  As a Standards Sponsor, it oversees the standards process in accordance to the IEEE-SA policies and procedures.  Additionally, standards development by the IES can be jointly sponsored with other societies, when appropriate.

Current Sub-committees are:

  • IEEE P21451-001 – Recommended Practices for Signal Treatment Applied to Smart Transducers
  • IEEE P61158 – Standard for Industrial Hard Real-Time Communication
  • IEEE P2660.1 – Recommended Practices on Industrial Agents: Integration of Software Agents and Low Level Automation Functions

Standards development are proposed and championed by IES members, from which the standards development Working Groups are formed sponsored by IES Standards Committee.

Each Working Group is chaired by a Working Group Chair, assisted by the Vice Chair and Secretary.

The standards working groups are de facto operational sub-committees within the TC, chaired by the WG Chair.

Objectives of the sub-committee on standards are:

  • First and foremost, to develop standards according to the IEEE-SA and Sponsor’s procedures and policies (PnP), from which all working groups develop their own PnPs to govern their process. In addition, for IES activities
  • Identify and distinguish activities in these standards that may impact the work (academic and industry) directions of society membership.
  • Assist in developing publications and presentations on standards where they are valued by IES membership

These IES activities will be covered by the Standards Committee members in support with technical activities of the other IES TCs.

As required by the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), the IES Standards Sponsor has an IES Standards Procedures and Policies document (PnP) that governs the standards development.  Likewise, each working group develops its own PnP to govern its procedures.

IES Standards Policies and Procedures document is available. (Click here to IES Standards Procedures and Process). Please avail yourself of the policies and procedures by reviewing the document.

Conferences, Papers and Standards

The Standards Group facilitates standards-oriented articles representing the relevant areas covered by the Technical Committees in the IE Magazine. Guest editors will be sought to shepherd authors and articles of relevance to the IES membership to keep them updated on emerging standards and works in progress. The group also formulates special sessions at IES conferences to focus on standards topics.

Continued progress will be carried out by the Standards Group to further enhance and highlight industrial standards - past, present, and future - to keep the membership abreast of technologies that impact their technical areas of interest.

Current Activities

The Standards Committee is currently coordinating the following standards related activities:

  1. IEEE P21451-001 PAR. Recommended Practice for Signal Treatment Applied to Smart Transducers.
    • Co-sponsored with the Instrumentation and Measurements Society (IMS)
    • PURPOSE: The purpose is to define a standardized and universal framework that allows smart transducers to extract features of the signal being generated and measured. With the definition of these practices, the raw data can be converted into information and then into knowledge.  In this context, knowledge means understanding the nature of the transducer signal.  This understanding can be shared with the system and other transducers in order to form a platform for sensory knowledge fusion.
    • Approved PAR by IEEE-SA (See P145.001[1])
    • Working Group (WG) Chair: Gustavo Monte, IES member
    • WG Vice Chair: RQ Yan, IMS member
    • Status: Final draft document, preparing for Balloting
  2. IEEE P61158 PAR. Standard for Industrial Hard Real-Time Communication
    • SCOPE: Ethernet POWERLINK is a communications profile for Real-Time Ethernet (RTE).   It extends Ethernet according to the IEEE 802.3 standard with mechanisms to transfer data with predictable timing and precise synchronization.  The communication profile meets timing demands typical for high performance automation and motion applications.  It does not change the basic principles of the Fast Ethernet Standard IEEE 802.3 but extends it towards RTE.  Thus it is possible to leverage and continue to use any standard Ethernet silicon, infrastructure component or test and measurement equipment like a network analyser.  Note that this standard does not add or otherwise change EPSG DS301.
    • Approved modified PAR by IEEE-SA (See P61158_PAR_Detail.pdf)
    • WG Chair: Dietmar Bruckner, IES member
    • WG Vice Chair: Allen Chen, IES member
    • Secretary: Aleksander Malinowski, IES member
    • Status: Standard in development
  3. IEEE P6220.1 PAR. Recommended Practices on Industrial Agents: Integration of Software Agents and Low Level Automation Function
    • Co-sponsored with the Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society (SMC)
    • PURPOSE:  The recommended practices intend to solve the interface problem when applying industrial agents, namely integrating software agents with automation control level in the context of cyber-physical systems.  The idea is to provide a description of a collection of best practices for the integration process according to the automation use cases and automation control level, aiming to standardize the interface process in order to allow the reuse and transparency.
    • Approved PAR by IEEE-SA (See P2660.1.pdf)
    • WG Chair: Paolo Leitao, IES member
    • WG Vice Chair: William Lumpkins, SMC member
    • Secretary: Thomas Strasser, IES member
    • Status: Standard in development

Past Events

The Standards Committee holds numerous standards activities throughout the year, mostly associated with Working Group meetings.

Working Group meetings are usually held at intervals of 6 to 8 weeks, via WebEX conferencing to accommodate members from multiple geographical regions.  Face to face Working Group meetings are also held during the main IES conferences coinciding with AdCom meetings, notably at ISIE and IECON conferences.  Face to face meetings will include WebEX conferencing to accommodate members unable to physically attend.

Standards Technical Committee meetings are held twice a year, normally coinciding with IES AdCom meetings at ISIE and IECON conferences. TC status reports are usually covered at these meetings plus new activities discussion.

A list of notable past activities (workshops, events, etc.) are provided as follows:

  1. Workshop at IECON 2012, Montreal-IEEE-SA Standards Workshop for IES
  2. Workshop tutorial at INDIN 2015, Cambridge, UK on IEEE-SA Standards for IES
  3. Face to Face Working Group meetings have been held as follows
    • 2013: IECON 2013, Vienna, Austria
    • 2014: I2MTC 2014 (IMS conference), Montevideo, Uruguay
    • 2015: I2MTC 2015 (IMS), Pisa, Italy; INDIN 2015, Cambridge, UK; IECON 2015, Yokohama, Japan
